I've read all of Susan's books and each one amazes me more than the previous one.
Another writer may have made the consistent series of obstacles unbearable to endure but Abulhawa has the skill of ensuring hope in even the darkest moments of her stories and even humour. The night that Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait she had found herself in a gang rape situation, and said that Saddam saved her life. While I have read both fiction and nonfiction books about the Middle East, I'm not going to pretend I fully comprehend the complexities of the conflicts. I believed he'd be the Arab leader who would finally defeat Western imperialists and Zionist colonizers') with particular attention to the lives of women, but I'm less convinced that it works as a coherent novel. There's a lot of content and a lot trying to be expressed through the main characters. The world outside calls Nahr a terrorist, and a whore; some might call her a revolutionary, or a hero. So good!
